Stroke @ KMRREC

People who have experienced stroke often suffer damage to areas of the brain that are responsible for memory. As a result, patients can exhibit diminished attention spans and problems with short and long-term memory. There are a number of general strategies that can assist people with memory problems:

  • Participate in rehabilitative therapy
  • Attend to one task at a time
  • Minimize distractions
  • Categorize information - group similar items together
  • Summarize information
  • Rehearse/practice tasks
  • Carry a pen and pad of paper
  • Make lists and notes as reminders
  • Exercise your brain - Discuss your day and the daily events with others

It is important for individuals with memory impairments to learn and use strategies in their everyday life. They can help to reduce frustration levels and improve independent functioning
