About Us

KMRREC is a non-profit medical research organization of the Henry H. Kessler (HHK) Foundation, Inc. with approximately 70 dedicated research staff including 20 doctoral level staff and post-doctoral fellows. Besides internal funding, KMRREC receives funding from federal research and training grants, National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research, United Spinal Association, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and charitable contributions from private donors. Its operating budget is approximately $ 9 million per year. Affiliated institutions include the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, ranked as one of the top 2 rehabilitation facilities in the US News and World Report and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – New Jersey Medical School.

KMRREC has two locations: (1) Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation Facility – West: This facility includes approximately 20,000 square feet of research and education space used for research in Stroke; Traumatic Brain Injury; Rehabilitation Outcomes; Spinal Cord Injury; Human Performance and Movement Analysis; and Rehabilitation Engineering. Educational resources, including classrooms and a medical library, as well as administrative offices are also located at this facility; (2) Executive Drive – This facility is located approximately one mile from Kessler-West, encompasses 3,300 square feet and houses the Neuropsychology and Neuroscience Laboratory.

Mission

The Mission of KMRREC is to be a premier medical research organization conducting rehabilitation research that will improve health and promote wellness for persons with physical disabilities, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. KMRREC offers educational programs, provides research training as well as disseminates its research findings to a national and international audience of scientists, clinicians, educators, and consumers who are dedicated to improving the qualify of life for persons with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Vision

KMRREC is a leading national and international rehabilitation research and education organization that conducts state-of-the-art research and, as a recognized center of excellence for rehabilitation education, communicates the results of its research to a broad audience of scientists, professionals, and consumers. The primary objective is to enhance the quality of patient care and optimize quality of life for persons with physical disabilities, as well as musculoskeletal, neurological, and chronic health conditions.

KMRREC will recruit, train and retain researchers and education staff who have a commitment to high quality rehabilitation research and education. The work environment and infrastructure for this effort will continue to improve to meet the administrative and technical demands of a rapidly developing and expanding organization.

KMRREC supports the belief that all health care professionals have an obligation to stay current and develop within their professional roles in order to provide outstanding rehabilitation health care services.

Principles
  1. KMRREC encourages applied research that utilizes modern technology to maximize human performance and facilitate the process of adaptation to disability.
  2. KMRREC promotes basic research that improves understanding of the determinants of adaptive human performance and disability within the context of impairment, disability, and/or handicap. KMRREC will also promote and engage in collaborative research aimed at curing underlying disease resulting in disabling conditions.
  3. KMRREC engages in collaborative research and education efforts with medical facilities, academic research organizations, universities and business community (e.g. pharmaceutical or durable medical equipment companies).
  4. KMRREC ensures that all educational activities meet specified standards as set forth by its accrediting agencies and that such activities be reviewed for relevancy and quality of content. KMRREC will also ensure that its educational programming be presented in a coordinated, efficient, and educationally sound manner.
  5. KMRREC provides research training for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral trainees in a variety of specialties, including physical medicine and rehabilitation, neuroscience, neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, biomechanics, kinesiology, nursing, health care outcomes, rehabilitation engineering and other related fields.
  6. KMRREC advocates for a federal rehabilitation research and training agenda that will improve the accessibility, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of its educational endeavors (e.g. videoconferencing, web-based learning, and publishing).
  7. KMRREC conducts research that will increase accessibility to and effectiveness of patient/family education and community outreach programs.
